Sensei Cauley,
I was fortunate enough to watch a Karate-Do and Kobudo demo featuring Ogasawara Hanshi and several of his seniors.
He gave me your email address and told me you are the Chief of the International division.
By now, you have talked to me by phone.
When I get out of the USAF in early 2009 I would appreciate the opportunity to train with you.
Thank you

Misawa Japan,
Mister Cauley,
Thank you for taking so much time to speak with me about Karate and about Japan on your visit here last week.
I was happy to return the favor with some information about tourism in our town. Nashville, Indiana is an Arts Colony but offers much more (something for everyone) We have 300 shops.
Again, thank you.

Hello Sensei,
I am fine and doing the Karate-doh every day here in Shikanaka.
I smile about summer training on the beach in Japan. How about the David Adams and Anthony Marquez? Can you still talk with Mister Price and Mister Greene? I will telephone you often.

Dear Juan,
I saw your question on the Ogasawara-Ha Shorinji Ryu Karatedo guest book and thought to write a suggestion.
Since most of us do not have wet rice straw here in America I've long used Styrofoam! It world wonders, and there is no resulting skin or joint damage. It is useful for both closed and open hand strikes as well as for finger strikes. Be sure to only strike it until you are uncomfortable, not until you experience pain or are bleeding. There is no merit in hurting yourself, and apart from the time off for recovery now, you will pay in your later years for all you do while young.
Best wishes,
Laurence

All the best life can bring to you and your family Sensei Cauley for 2008. My memories of that third floor dojo in Dover, De practicing in the intense heat of summer (with the windows closed )Sumi Kan's idea I'am sure..this will always be part of my spirit...along with a blindfolded head instructor cutting a melon in half on a yellow belt's stomach, with a 16th century samurai sword...!!

Mr. Cauley,
I feel that I know you due to my affliation with Jose Enrique (he is my father-in-law and my Sensei). I regret that I have not had the opportunity to meet you in person. I enjoyed this site and it is refreshing to see quality instead of the commercialized and watered-down versions of so called "karate".

My sincere gratitude to Mr.Anthony Masucci, Mr.Mark Louis, and Mr.Charles Scott for their support and participation Saturday October 27th at our first Annual Youth Karate Shiai in Wadsworth, Ohio.
There were 22 children competitors in the following divisions kata, kumite, and (Kobudo Kata for brown belts only). Everyone displayed fine karatedo spirit and the event was a good example of how the brothers and sisters of Ogasawara-ha Sakugawa Koshiki Karatedo gather together to help and support each other for the benefit of all. The shiai
was a great success and we all look forward to attending our National Shiai next fall as well as our second Youth Karate Shiai here in Wadsworth.

Sensei,
I was so happy to find this web site about Shorinji-Ryu. I attended a Kan Geiko Training Session with you at Shikanaka, Japan in 1974. It was one of the hardest things I have done. I remember "Hell Night" when we were awakened each hour to run and do kata for an hour and back to bed. What a night it was. I have fond memories of everyone who was there that year.
The lessons learned with you in Japan and at our visits to Rokunohe Monastery and to the Honbu will last a lifetime.
Thank you, Sensei Cauley, for the valuable lessons you imparted to a young and brash student of the Way.

On 12th August 2006 I was fortunate enough to witness a Karatedo seminar conducted by Kyoshi Tom Cauley, here in Memphis, Tennessee. I couldn't believe Mr. Cauley is 63 years old and can still do kata and kihon like a 20 year old. I just want to say that it was a pleasure to see how good technique matures over the years when Karatedo is done correctly for a long time. I just want to give this praise.

I was elated to find this web site about Shorinji-Ryu Karate. I was a member of the US Navy and stationed at Misawa Air Base, Japan in 1975. I began my Karate with Mr. Cauley, who was then an Air Force member. The dojo at Misawa was very tough. His "no Nonsense" training led a lot of us to a deeper understanding about Budo and about Japan and her culture.
I had the distinct pleasure of being invited, by Sensei Cauley, to visit and train at the Hombu and under, then Headmaster Tokushiro Ogasawara, Cauley's immediate teacher. I still practice the precepts of Karatedo in my Law Practice here in Arizona.
My respect and greetings to Sensei Cauley.

I have known Mr. Cauley since Misawa, Japan and consider him a true friend and Sensei. He taught me a great deal about the true spirit of Karate Do. Today I found notes from Mr. Shibasaki and Mr. Sumi both in Japan and was very pleased that they rememebered our time in Misawa. Mr. Cauley has connected more lives than anyone can tell. Thank you Tom for your teaching and immeasurable efforts to make this world and Karate Do better. It's working!

I was surfing around the internet search engines and came across this site. It stirred a few memories. During 1972 I was a student of Burt Konzak in Toronto, Canada and we had the opportunity to travel to Hidy Ochiai's tournanment in Binghamton, N.Y. During that trip I met Mr. Cauley and several of his senior students who had come from Dover, Delaware where he was in the Air Force.
His students were strong, well heeled, and demonstrated Budo to it's fullest extent. I was impressed with him and his students and am happy to learn that Mr. Cauley is still kicking and punching today. I just wanted to relate my appreciation and to let you know that man does not know how he affects another in his life.

Sensei Thomas Cauley, This is Steve "Kuma" Sulley. I was so glad to see your website!!! I sought out Sensei Cauley on one of his trips to to Alaska. In 1971 Sensei Cauley took me under his wing and created his Alaska Dojo allowed me to teach. In 1972 we sponsored the first Alaskan All Karate-Do tournament. 6 karate schools attended. Our students won every level in kumite and 50% in kata competion. We were fortunate enough to have Sensei Cauley hold Clinic for our students in Alaska to prepare them for the tournament. In 1973 I was transferred to San Antonio and Started a Dojo at Kelly Air Force Base. We had Sensei Cauley instruct clinics on several occasions. I was always impressed with Sensei Cauley, always willing to assist anyone who was willing to sacrifice their time and live the true way of Budo. In 1976 I was assigned to Misawa AB Japan where I was reunited with Sensei Cauley and studied in Japan. We had training on the beach, in the snow, and in the temple. In 1981 I was assigned to Scott AFB were I taught for until 1984. Now I am a Grandfather of 5 and would like to pass on Karate -Do to my Grandchildren. I just want to say thank you to Sensei Cauley my friend, my brother and for the way, you help mold of life and lifetime of memories I will cherish forever. Steve "Kuma" Sulley, Nidan,Shorinji-Ryu

Today I met Mister Cauley at, at all things, a Strategic Planning session for Humphreys County, Waverly, Tennessee. During general conversation, I learned that he was a Karate-Ka. I, too, studied Shotokan Karate from 1965 until present and am ranked as the Rokudan. I was so happy to have had the time to talk to Mr. Cauley today. You never know who you are talking to some time. That is why it is always best to be quiet sometimes. Sincerely, Norman Rusacci

I surfed onto this website while looking for Shorinji Ryu Karate. I was elated to find that Sensei Cauley is still alive and well and is still teaching Shorinji Ryu. I was his student at his dojo at Misawa Air Base, Japan during 1967 and 1968. I still remember the dojo with no heat and a concrete floor. Wonder we all did not get ill. I still remember the hard practices, meeting the Headmaster, Mister Ogasawara, practicing at the Honbu in Japan and how much Sensei Cauley pushed us. Today, I am thankful for that hard practice because it has helped get me through some rather hard times. So, Thank you Sensei and GOD Bless. Eddie Mallard Beginner

What a great web site. My style is Shorin Ji Ryu Kenkokan but I am very familiar with the Ogasawara School of Shorn Ji Ryu Karate-Do. I am also very familiar with the Senior teachers of that school of Karate-Do. Years ago I was fortunate enough to travel to Japan with a company I worked for. I was sent to the Northern Japan area to Misawa Air Base about 1967. I looked for, and found a good Shorin Ji Ryu dojo run by Mr. Cauley when he was in the USAF there. I beleive he was an investigator of some sort. I was happy when he took me to the Honbu and to meet the Headmaster Ogasawara Jiro. I hope Mr. Cauley remembers me because it was a high point in my training. Later, that year, he took me to Tokyo to meet Konishi Shihan. They were wonderful days full of great training opportunities. I recently spoke with Mr. Cauley on the telephone and was happy to find him still teaching Karate-Do and still healthy and active. I just wanted to write this testmonial account of years past. Sensei Cauley, I never knew you as I left Japan in 1977. Possibly you were one of my new students at Sensiei Shoen Fukuda's dojo at Misawa Air Base. I was the primary instructor for Sensei Fukuda at MAB from 1975-77. I consider Sensei Fukuda my friend and brother as we are of the same age and I spent my days in his home with his family. He took my wife as his daughter and I took his children as my own. I achieved a 4th dan before I left Japan and regret the day I left. I wish with all my heart I could be back there right now. What a joy to find this site. I was stationed in Korat Thailand during 1966 with Tom when he was a new Lt. in the USAF. Good supervisor. I was also one of his Karate students when he taught at Camp Sunararee, Thailand; the Thai flying base next door. I remember that he got a medal from the King of Thailand for teaching the first known Thai/American Karate club known. There was also another man there who taught Tae Kwon Do but don't remember his name. I know he was killed in a car wreck though in Thailand. Does anyone out there remember him? He played in the Nit Noy band. It is good to see that Karate is still alive and well with my old teacher. I will call you and talk over old times with you. I am still doing Karate but Shotokan now. It is so good to read entries from so many Shorinji Ryu Karate-do students around the world. I thought I would add mine to those others. I am the Poland Country Director for Shorinji Ryu of Ogasawara schools. I traveled to Japan two times in 1968 and 1969 to train with both the Honbudojo and with Mister Thomas Cauley who was in the United States Air Force on northern part of Honshu Island, Japan. I am now the Doctor of Vet Services. I am now owner of the 5dan of Karate-do. I remember some of the American Karate people in Japan during that time with Mister Cauley at his dojo at Misawa. Mister Clifton Phelps was so much help for me but he is long past. Mister Tony Mays, also dead now, was a kind senior for Mister Cauley. I have so sweet memories about Karate-do training in Japan and was so happy when Mister Cauley took me to the Honbudojo of Ogasawara. I am trying to teach the traditional values I gained in Japan. Thank you Sensei Tomaz

I have recently been appointed as the National Director to South Africa for Ogasawara Ha Shorinjiryu Karatedo by Dr. T. Cauley - Chief Instructor International Division. I would just like to add for the record that never in the 30 years of my individual involvement within traditional classic karatedo, have myself and my country ever been accepted with such open arms and respect. It is for myself and the Ogasawara Ha practitioners in South Africa an honour and complete godsend to belong to such incredible masters of the art aswell as the most unique and professional close knit family and 'brotherhood', as far as i am concerned within the world of karatedo. We are without a shadow of a doubt, a league on it's own. To Dr. Cauley and all the Directors at Sohonbu in Japan, we at Ogasawara Ha Shorinjiryu Karatedo Honbu in South Africa...SALUTE YOU ALL!!! May god bless you all and keep you with us for many a year to come. Yours in budo, Kaicho Henri Eksteen.

I was a young lad of 13 when i met sensei cauley at a youth center on misawa airbase. I studied with him at the youth center for a year then was given the unprecedented honor of being ask to join the adult class on security hill. i studied with sensei until he left misawa airbase around 1978. I continue to look back on my time studying with him and reflect what an impact it had on me. Sensei was one of the driving forces in my life that guided me through some very difficult times. I now am a nidan in shito-ryu, but I have never been able, through many attempts, to find a dojo that ever came close to his sumi dojo. I would like to communicate this to him, and I wondered if there was an email or land mail address for him. I assume as he worked in the post office in misawa and was and probably still is a traditional man that he may not have email. i would appreciate any assistance anyone could give me. My email address is foxjg1@hotmail.com. thanx.

The General Director, Teikeishiro Ogasawara, has instructed us to refer to our karatedo system where appropriate as Ogasawara-ha Shorinjiryu Karatedo. The style name Sakugawa Koshiki Shorinjiryu Karatedo has not changed and still appears on official documents. This wider use of the name Ogasawara-ha is intended to reduce confusion with other styles of karatedo using the term Koshiki.

Back in February 2005, I sat and watched the Winter National Karate Tournament at Kennesaw University, Atlanta area. I have been a Karate student since 1984 and was totally impressed with the display of high character, budo attitude, fair play and respect each of the participants showed. The tournament promoters were both Professors at Kennesaw and at the University of Georgia. The Chief judge was also, I learned, a Professor in the past. These gentlemen showed character that I haven't seen in a long time. I just wanted to take this opportunity to express my surprise at finding that Budo still lives in some places. I was able to speak with one of the gentlemen watching with me and learned that the style is Shorinji-Ryu Karatedo and it is very strict and regimented. Congratulations to you all and thank you for such a well run event.

I am happy to see this website about Shorinji Ryu Karate-Do. More rewarding is the fact that I was in Mister Cauley's original American dojo in Hampton, Virginia in 1969 when he first came back from Japan. I can still remember how hard practice was there on Armistead Avenue. I never worked so hard in my life. I have gained his telephone number and we have talked about the old days in Hampton. Karate has really changed since that time. Most folks back then were traditional teachers and Mister Cauley was one of the best, having just come back from Japan. Looking at this website, I can see that that tradition has continued even today. It was really good talking with you on the telephone, Sensei. I hope to visit him or some of his seniors in Georgia or in Ohio. Miguel is in the Dominican Republic now and teaching Karate-Do. Keep up the wonderful work in Shorin-Ji Ryu. Hello I practice a different lineage of Shorinjiryu Karatedo - that of Shinan Kori Hisataka (1907-1988). Kyoshi Cauley was kind enough to leave a message on my website's guestbook, and I am returning the courtesy! This is a great website, and it is a pleasure to look through information about a Shorinjiryu that shares some similar roots, but has a different evolution. Best wishes Des Paroz, 4th Dan Australian Shorinjiryu Karatedo www.Kengokai.com

I was surprised to find this site about Shorin Ji Ryu Karate. I was a student of Karl Hovey who is a Godan in Shorin Ji Ryu Karate in Fredericksburg, Va. I was able to travel to Dover, Delware in the early 70's and practice at the Sumi Kan (Sensei Cauley's dojo). I remember that he had over 100 students almost every night. I miss those days of the large dojos and the spirit that resonated in them. Respectfully, Stanley Youngblood Halffull1212@aol.com

Just want to congratulate everyone on this nice website. One of the best I have seen lately. I surfed around in it for hours and still couldn't read everything available. My style is Shotokan but studied Shorinjiryu with Mr. Cauley when he had his dojo in Dover, Delaware in 1970. I was a kid then and he probably doesn't remember me because there were about 150 of us there. Anyway, thanks to him and his senior students I have stayed in Karatedo since. In respect, Billyweston@aol.com

I am meeting Mister David Adams when he was living in Florida in Jacksonville. I was in the US Navy there at Cecil Field. Mister Adams was my Sensei and then sometimes Mr. Cauley would come to Jacksonville to do seminar and testing and special training. Sometimes, then, we would go to the University of Central Florida and there to his dojo and work on Saturdays. Now that I am in Miami and out of the US Navy, I miss the brotherly love and togetherness we all shared in Shorinji Ryu Karate. I still try to practice what I learnt. I am now discovering that Mr. ADAMS has retired from the US Navy and gone to live in the Philippines. I called Sensei Cauley and learnt this from him. Mr. Cauley gave me some confidence about Shorinji Ryu Karate and some contacts in the style here near Miami. I am looking forward to getting involved again after a long period of being out. I am forever thankful to those teachers who, a long time ago, showed me the way. I believe I have been a better person because of them. Pedro Jiminez

I have been an avid reader of your webpages for over a year now. I have been able to learn some Japanese, history and brush up on my etiquette via these pages. I just want to thank the originators of this site. It has helped tremendously with my limited knowledge of things Japanese and with my Karate. Nice work . Michael

I enjoy going back to your web site and learning about Karate. I have been a student of Shorinji Ryu going back to 1972 with Steve Sulley who left Alaska in 1973 and went to Japan to learn Shorinji Ryu and study with his Sensei Tom Cauley. I have been remiss in my practice, especially in Kobudo. I hope to be able to go to the National tournament this year. I have talked with Sensei Cauley on the telephone a number of times lately and he has given me the boot that I needed to get going again. Oh! did I mention that he demoted me two grades. Does anyone know where Steve Sulley is these days? Everyone, please keep up the daily practice. I am proud to be a member and will do my very best from now on. Work with EXXON has kept me away from Karate practice more than I needed. Sensei Cauley told me, on the phone, that "everyone has the same amount of time" It is how we use it that is most important. SarahMichelleGellartwo@yahoo.com Personally,I have an affection for Shotokan or Washinryu and even Isshinryu, but am a blackbELt in KENPO and teach that in Library Of Locality and wish all Happy Holidays.Washinryu and Shotokan are both Sisters or Twinmartiarts or otherwise Identical or atleast similar albeit Shoto-Kan is Authorized Fightstyleof Njapan-Nippon,not Washin/Ryu.Way Hidy Ochiai taught or teaches Washin\Ryu,it has TAI'CHI(GENTLEKARATE)and TAIQUANDO and an awesome array of Fightarts blended it in with it albeit I admire she instructor of Pacific Martialarts Washinryu Eva Steinwald.!Y'SHUASCJK is the name of lee particular interpretation of Martialarts I teach,ISAMESSIAH SINGLETARY CAGLAR JUAN KENPO!

I was surprised to read your guest pages and find some old acquaintances. I was in and out of Misawa Air Base, Japan during the 70's with a VP Squadron out of Moffett Field, California. I would go to Mr. Cauley's dojo when I was in country and work with out with him. I was humbled to have been taken to the Honbu in Kamitacho. I met the, then Headmaster, Tokushiro Ogasawara. I was amazed at his technique and spirit. Mr. Cauley was a mirror image. Thank you Sensei for your guidance when I was young because it has come back to me in my old age now that I am fighting Cancer. My thanks for teaching me that fighting spirit will overcome everything. You told me once "don't ever fear the things that destroy the body but be very afraid of the things that steal your spirit." Thank you Sensei. Richard Northcut Shorinjiryu beginner

I retired from the US Marines after 30 years, and while stationed at MCAS, HAWAII, I traveled greatly to Okinawa and Misawa with some Navy friends. In Oki, I studied under Sensei Shoen Fukuda for a number of years while staying with him and his family at his home/dojo. I would like to know about the sensei; I believed I read someplace about 'the late sensei Shoen Fukuda' and I do not want to believe this. Can you update me on his present status? I did appear on one of his Japanese karate books and would like to have a copy of it. Contact me at: jpomales1@cfl.rr.com

I saw the information on Shorinjiryu on this website and I have been a student of your representative Karl Kazuo Hovey in Fredericksburg, in the past. I just wanted to let everyone know that this is a really good website and has really helped me with terms, history and etiquette and as well put me into contact with some real good people in Shorinjiryu.
